This chapter looks at subtraction concepts. Wonder what objectives your child will be focusing on during this chapter? Take a look at the "I Can" statements. I Can:
Use pictures and objects, along with the strategy "make a model" to solve taking from and taking apart subtraction problems.
Compare groups in pictures to understand subtraction.
Identify how many are left when subtracting all or 0 (ex. 6 - 6 = 0 and 6 - 0 = 6)
Model and compare groups to show the meaning of subtraction.
Model and record all the ways to take apart numbers within 10 (8 - 1 = 7, 8 - 2 = 6, etc)
Build fluency for subtraction within 10.
How can you support this work at home? Check in with your child to find out if they are understanding the vocabulary in the letter above. Try out the activity in the letter, too. Your child could make their own subtraction cards to practice the basic facts at home.
Students might enjoy looking at the videos below to review or practice concepts we will be leaning in school during this chapter. The videos might be corny, but gives you the opportunity to discuss the concepts. The tens frame one might seem for a younger audience, but the concept is great!
This is the book that the letter recommended.
